The QCE System Explained

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is awarded to Year 12 students upon successfully completing four core units in five General subjects. Each General subject consists of four units, earning a total of four QCE credits per subject.

·Units 1 and 2: Typically completed in Year 11, these are formative assessments and do not count towards the final ATAR.
·Units 3 and 4: Taken in Year 12, these are summative assessments that contribute directly to the ATAR calculation.

To receive a QCE, students need at least 20 QCE credits, although they can accumulate up to 28 credits. Most Queensland students graduate with 24 QCE credits (4 units from 6 General subjects).

What Subjects Do I Need for QCE and ATAR?

In the QCE system, subjects are divided into two categories:
1.General Subjects:
  a. Count towards both QCE and ATAR.
2.Applied Subjects:
a.Count towards QCE, but only one Applied subject can be used in the ATAR calculation.
Some students opt to complete diplomas or certificates during Years 11 and 12. However, all students must successfully pass at least one English subject to qualify for both the QCE and ATAR.

For the remaining five or six advanced courses, there is a wide variety to choose from, including:
· Mathematics
· Sciences
· Business
· Arts
· Humanities
· Languages
This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies to their interests and career aspirations.
